A communicator of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Grcae Amoabeng has dismissed the Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) policy, describing it as an initiative that fails to address the deep-seated structural crises in Ghana’s health sector.
Speaking on GhOne TV’s Morning Show, GhToday, on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the NPP Communicator argued that the policy is a populist move, which is unsustainable.
Amoabeng contended that the primary hurdle facing Ghanaian patients is not merely the cost of a consultation but the chronic lack of equipment, personnel, and medication at the local level.
“This new free Primary Healthcare Policy is not going to solve anything in the health sector,” she said.
The newly launched FPHC seeks to among other things provide cost-free treatment for basic illnesses such as malaria, cholera at the CHPS, and polyclinic levels; provide annual health screenings for all Ghanaians to detect hypertension and diabetes as well as offer priority postings for health volunteers participating in the rollout.
Amoabeng’s criticism of the new policy feeds into a larger claim by opposition members that the services that will be provided under the FPHC are no different from those offered under the National He’s Insurance Policy (NHIS) policy.
Government Communicators, however, maintain that this policy, which compliments the NHIS, is the ‘biggest social intervention policy’ in the health sector.
