A legal practitioner who doubles as a member of the NDC communications team, Benjamin Alpha-Aidoo Esq., has condemned the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, describing them as ‘despicable and unacceptable’.
His reaction follows the circulation of viral videos showing disturbing attacks on Ghanaians living in South Africa, sparking fear and concern within the diaspora community.
Speaking on GhOne TV’s Morning Show, GhToday on Wednesday, April 23, 2016, he urged Ghana and other African countries to take stronger, coordinated action by involving international bodies and South African authorities to stop the problem.”
”It is high time that Africa—Ghana and Africa—stand up to SA leadership over these matters. We need to confront it, not as quiet diplomacy, but we need to escalate it even to the multilateral level where we table it as an important issue at the African Union level,” he said.
The government communicator further demanded a coordinated condemnation of the attacks on other African nationals in the country, insisting that it is only ‘bold leadership’ from African leaders that would end the attacks.
“I am very, very confident in the leadership of the Foreign Affairs Minister. If there is one bold politician that can take the bull by the horn and take South Africa on…,” he said.
Alpha-Aidoo Esq. further urged South Africans to end the attacks on other Africans as the continent played significant role in ending apartheid in their country and their subsequent independence.
“The people of South Africa do not know the role that the continent played in the apartheid regime that led to their independence. If they knew, they wouldn’t treat other Africans this way.
So I think that Africa needs to come together and indicate to South Africa that they owe an obligation to protect every individual, regardless of their nationality, that come onto their land,” he said.
