The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has disclosed that the Government of Ghana has prepared various forms of welcoming packages for Ghanaian nationals who have agreed to be repatriated into the country from South Africa.
Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa who announced the intervention package ahead of the arrival of the first batch expected in Ghana tomorrow said all evacuated Ghanaians would benefit from welcome home financial package, as well as transportation assistance to enable them travel to their various destinations across the country.
The package also includes a reintegration allowance, free psychosocial support, and placement in a special government database for job and startup opportunities.
These nationals who were domiciling in South Africa agreed to be repatriated following Xenophobic attacks on black Africans living and working in the rainbow nation.
The attacks which are largely linked to anti-immigration protests and growing economic frustrations, has sparked fear across migrant communities and prompted diplomatic intervention from several African governments.
The latest incidents gained international attention after disturbing videos circulated on social media showing foreign nationals being harassed, threatened, and assaulted in parts of Johannesburg, Pretoria, and KwaZulu-Natal.
A Ghanaian man was allegedly confronted and ordered to leave South Africa, triggering outrage in Ghana and among the wider African community.
In response to the worsening situation, the Government of Ghana has initiated moves to evacuate 300 affected Ghanaians using a special chartered flight departing from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Thursday, 21st May.
