The Head of Corporate Communications at the Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority and a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, Stephen Delali Sewoekpor, has cautioned that the unchecked spread of sophisticated firearms in the country poses a grave risk to national security.
Speaking on GHOne TV’s Morning Show, GHToday, Sewoekpor expressed concern over the ease with which private security agencies appear to acquire advanced weaponry, including pump-action guns.
He questioned how these private entities had obtained such sophisticated arms, noting that their capabilities now rival those of state security agencies.
“This private security business could match up to any of our security agencies. And how did they get this? How were they able to be equipped with all these sophisticated weapons?” Sewoekpor asked.
“This continues to give credence to the raging debate that has been going on about the proliferation of sophisticated guns within our society.”
He argued that the presence of such weapons inevitably breeds insecurity.
Referencing a recent incident in which private security personnel allegedly fired at the vehicle of former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo with intent to kill, Sewoekpor raised questions about the directives given to the operatives.
“From my own perspective…what was the instruction that was given to them? What was the directive that was given to them?” he said.
Sewoekpor described the matter as fundamentally a family issue but urged restraint, stating that no conscientious person should be overly preoccupied with leadership succession matters “when your dad is still in the morgue.”
He therefore appealed to the security agencies to work to rid the system of small arms.
