A leading member of the Convention People’s Party(CPP), Kwame Jantuah has urged the government to institutionalize regular clean-up exercises as a permanent national priority.
Speaking on GH Today on GhOne TV with host Lily Mohammed, Jantuah commended the presidency’s directive for an anti-flood task force to coordinate the removal of debris left by the June 29 floods across the country.
He described the move as “a step in the right direction” but insisted on the need for structural reform.”
He, however, warned that the newly announced nationwide initiative must not remain a temporary reaction to the recent devastating floods.
“But we need every month, every month, you have to clean your surroundings. Tankers will come round, and if tankers come round and the surrounding isn’t clean, they fine you,” Jantuah said.
To him, the government must emphasize consistent enforcement and public responsibility in spite of the challenges in maintaining such systems.
The government has thought various institutions such as NADMO and an anti-flood task force, which includes the military began a process of demolishing buildings on water ways and also desilting choked drains.
