A 42-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for defiling a seven-year-old boy in Wa in the Upper West Region.
Elyasu Kunateh was handed the sentence by the Wa High Court on Thursday, July 23, 2026, after being found guilty following a full trial.
According to the Upper West Regional Police Command, Kunateh was arrested on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, after the victim’s mother reported the incident to the police.
The alleged abuse occurred on Saturday, January 17, 2026.
Police said investigators took immediate action after receiving the complaint, including referring the seven-year-old victim to a medical facility for examination and providing him with psychosocial support.
Kunateh was subsequently arraigned before the Wa High Court and remanded into police custody as investigations and court proceedings continued.
“On Thursday, July 23, 2026, after a full trial at the Wa High Court, His Lordship Justice Osei-Wusu Antwi found him guilty of the offence and sentenced him to ten (10) years imprisonment In Hard Labour,” the police said in a statement.
The Upper West Regional Police Command said it remains committed to protecting vulnerable people and pursuing reported cases involving abuse.
“The Upper West Regional Police Command assures the public that, it remains committed to protecting vulnerable persons, and will continue to pursue all reported cases of child abuse, sexual and gender base violence,” the statement said.
The Command also called on parents, guardians, caregivers and the general public to be alert and report suspected cases of abuse.
“The Command further encourages parents, guardians, caregivers, and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of abuse to the nearest police facility for immediate action,” it added.
