Aspiring National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has issued an unreserved apology to Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi and the party following comments he made during an appearance on Citi TV.
In a statement dated August 20, 2026, Vanderpuye said he had carefully reviewed his remarks on Citi TV that morning and acknowledged that he failed to communicate his intended position clearly.
“I wish to sincerely apologise for my comments during my presentation on Citi TV this morning. Having had the opportunity to listen carefully to myself and reflect on the discussion, I acknowledge that I did not communicate my intended position in the manner I should have. I take full responsibility for that,” he stated.
Vanderpuye emphasised that it was never his intention to undermine or condemn Gyamfi, a fellow NDC member, or to support opposition attacks directed at him and GoldBod.
“My record, my convictions and my commitment to the NDC would never permit me to knowingly strengthen the hands of our political opponents against one of our own,” he said.
He explained that his actual aim during the discussion was to defend the work of GoldBod and Gyamfi’s efforts.
However, in reacting to sustained propaganda and attacks surrounding the matter, he expressed himself in a way that created a completely different impression.
“For that error of judgement and communication, I am sincerely sorry,” the statement read.
Vanderpuye offered a particular apology to Gyamfi, describing him as a dedicated party member who has served the NDC with courage and commitment over the years.
He said Gyamfi deserves the full support of the party as he undertakes one of the most important national responsibilities entrusted to him.
“Whatever observations I may have had should never have been expressed in a manner capable of being interpreted as validating the attacks of our political opponents against him,” he added.
He also apologised to the NDC leadership, members, and particularly the grassroots who were disappointed or hurt by the comments.
Vanderpuye noted that at a time when party comrades and the institutions they lead face politically motivated attacks, those in leadership positions are rightly expected to demonstrate solidarity, sound judgement, and loyalty to the collective cause.
Reaffirming his long-standing commitment to the party, Vanderpuye stated that he has spent a significant part of his political life standing and fighting for the NDC, including through difficult personal and political circumstances.
“The NDC is my political home, and my loyalty and commitment to its cause remain unwavering,” he concluded.
The apology follows criticism from some NDC members after Vanderpuye, speaking on Citi TV on August 20, 2026 suggested he would have adopted a different tone and communication style than Gyamfi in responding to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin during a Government Accountability Series appearance the previous day.
Gyamfi had robustly defended GoldBod against allegations of significant losses linked to the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
Vanderpuye, a former Member of Parliament and former National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), is currently seeking the NDC’s national chairmanship.
