National Democratic Congress Communications Team member, Roger Wills, has highlighted the financial difficulties faced by teachers, saying many struggle to make ends meet despite their contribution to society.
Speaking to Isaac Addae on The Verdict on Starr FM, Roger Wills said his perspective is informed by his experience as the son of a teacher, which he said exposed him to the realities of teachers’ financial struggles.
“As a son of a teacher, I have gone through that. You know how they live. Before their month ends, their salary is already gone.”
He explained that teachers often have to manage their salaries against their daily financial obligations, leaving them with little or no money before the end of the month.
According to him, the financial difficulties experienced by teachers are an issue that should receive broader attention and be discussed beyond emotional reactions.
Roger Wills said the country should create room for people who have worked in the education sector and have risen to influential positions to contribute their experiences and perspectives to the discussion on teachers’ welfare.
“What we should be looking at as a country is to bring all the individuals who have worked in that space and have gotten to a position that I think should add a voice.”
He noted that many prominent people, including parliamentarians, have previously worked as teachers, arguing that their experiences could be useful in discussions on the challenges confronting the profession.
Roger Wills stressed that the financial realities faced by teachers should therefore be treated as a serious issue for national discussion, rather than approached purely from an emotional standpoint.
