NPP demands Chief Justice resign after partisan comments praising NDC performance

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has demanded that Ghana’s Chief Justice immediately retract comments praising the performance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government or resign from office, alleging that the head of the judiciary has abandoned neutrality and aligned himself with the ruling party.

In a strongly worded statement issued on 3 September 2026 and signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the opposition party said it was reacting with “profound shock and disgust” to a circulating video in which the Chief Justice offered comparative political commentary.

According to the NPP, the Chief Justice suggested that the current NDC administration and its appointed chief executives were performing better than the previous eight years of NPP government.

“This is not the language of a Chief Justice. It is the language of a party propagandist,” the statement declared.

The party thus argued that such remarks have “no place whatsoever in the mouth of the head of Ghana’s Judiciary.”

Citing Articles 125 and 127 of the 1992 Constitution, the NPP emphasised that the judiciary must remain independent and free from the control or direction of any person or authority.

It further recalled the judicial oath requiring the Chief Justice to administer justice “without fear or favour, affection or ill will.”

The party claimed the video was not an isolated incident but the culmination of a pattern.

The NPP also accused the Chief Justice of frequently attending functions organised by political appointees of the current government and of behaving “as a courtier of the Executive.”

A judge who does so, the NPP argued, cannot credibly sit as a neutral umpire in cases involving the executive.

Particular concern was raised over the Chief Justice’s reported vow that “everything must be done to ensure that the agenda of the President succeeds.”

The statement linked this to Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), under which persons associated with the NPP are being prosecuted.

It pointed to the incarceration of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, as evidence of “justice at two speeds” — rapid action against government opponents and slower processes for its allies.

“The Chief Justice’s words and conduct lend chilling credence to the widespread concern that the leadership of the Judiciary is coordinating with Jubilee House,” the party said.

It described a judiciary that pledges loyalty to a president’s agenda as “a third chamber of Jubilee House, distinguished only by its robes.”

The NPP also criticised the Chief Justice for allegedly neglecting the physical state of court facilities while focusing on other government agencies.

It claimed many courtrooms and registries remain in poor condition, yet the Chief Justice has not prioritised their repair or reform of justice delivery.

The party announced that it would in due course hold a major press conference to present a fuller record of the Chief Justice’s conduct.

The NPP therefore demanded that he “immediately and unreservedly retract his partisan commentary and his vow of loyalty to the President’s agenda” or resign and “formally join the NDC.”

It further called on the President to fill a vacancy on the Council of State and to publicly disavow any arrangement concerning the Chief Justice’s post-retirement future.

“The courtroom is the last refuge of the ordinary Ghanaian,” the statement concluded, “and the NPP will resist its conversion into an instrument of political persecution with every lawful means at our disposal.”
