Former Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has broken his silence following his departure from the Black Stars, confirming that he and the Ghana Football Association mutually agreed to terminate his contract.
Queiroz said the decision followed discussions held in a spirit of mutual respect, with both parties agreeing that ending their professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action under the circumstances.
“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else,” Queiroz said.
The Portuguese coach described his time with the national team as an honour and expressed gratitude to the GFA, particularly its President, for trusting him with the responsibility of leading the Black Stars.
“It has been an honour to serve Ghana and the Black Stars. I sincerely thank the Ghana Football Association and particularly its President for their trust and for the opportunity to lead such a proud football nation,” he added.
Queiroz said he arrived in Ghana with the ambition of building a stronger future for the Black Stars while contributing to the development of the country’s football talent.
However, he admitted that the necessary conditions to achieve those objectives were not fully established, while the team’s recent performances also contributed to the decision to end his tenure.
“I came to Ghana determined to help build a stronger future for the Black Stars and support the development of the country’s talent. Despite our commitment and efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end,” he stated.
Queiroz also expressed his appreciation to his technical staff and everyone who supported the team, particularly during preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“I leave with respect, gratitude and pride,” he said.
“I thank my technical staff and everyone who supported us, particularly since the start of our work, preparing for the World Cup 2026.”
Queiroz’s departure comes just days after the Black Stars suffered a 4-2 defeat to Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Ghana Football Association will now begin the process of finding a new coach to lead the Black Stars into their upcoming AFCON qualifying assignments.
