The government is reviewing the implementation of its model market projects to accelerate construction and ensure that underperforming contractors are replaced, Local Government Minister Mahama Ayariga has announced.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, October 5, Mr Ayariga said the government had re-scoped the market projects into phases to facilitate the early completion of key components.
Under the revised approach, the construction of market stores and sheds will constitute the first phase, while social amenities will be delivered as a second phase.
“We have re-scoped the market construction in phases to enable the early completion of the market stores and sheds component as phase one and the addition of the social amenities component as the second phase,” he said.
Mr Ayariga said a committee had also been established to assess the progress of work and the capacity of contractors undertaking the projects.
He explained that contractors who are found to lack the capacity to meet performance expectations would have their contracts terminated and reassigned to more competent firms.
The Minister further disclosed that negotiations had been completed to enable contractors to return to site on the Kumasi Central Market Phase II and Takoradi Market Circle projects.
He added that discussions were still ongoing regarding Phase III of the Kejetia Market project.
The government’s revised approach is intended to speed up the delivery of the market infrastructure while ensuring that contractors are held accountable for delays and poor performance.
