The government plans to assign selected streets in major cities to private companies to support their reconstruction, redevelopment and maintenance, Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister Mahama Ayariga has announced.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, October 5, Mr Ayariga said the initiative would involve private sector companies including banks, manufacturing firms, construction companies, logistics businesses and insurance companies.
Under the proposed arrangement, participating companies could be granted advertising rights along the streets they support as an incentive for their involvement.
Mr Ayariga also indicated that some streets could potentially be renamed or have their names shared with existing personalities as part of the initiative.
“Under the direction of President Mahama we have commenced an exercise to assign all streets in our major capital cities to private businesses,” he said.
He explained that the initiative was intended to mobilise private sector support for improving the condition and appearance of streets while reducing the burden on government.
According to the Minister, the first report on the initiative is expected from the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority and the National Urban Roads Directorate.
The report will inform the framework for private sector participation, which will subsequently be submitted to President John Mahama for approval.
Mr Ayariga said the broader objective was to improve the appearance, functionality and overall urban environment of Ghanaian cities through stronger collaboration between government and the private sector.
