The government has increased the monthly allowances for Paramount Chiefs and Queen Mothers from GH¢1,200 to GH¢3,000.
The increase forms part of measures to strengthen Ghana’s traditional leadership system and improve support for traditional authorities who work closely with local government structures.
Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister Mahama Ayariga disclosed this at the Government Accountability Series held at the Jubilee House on Monday, October 5.
According to Mr Ayariga, the current administration has also ensured the payment of six quarters of allowances since it assumed office.
“Under President Mahama the payment of monthly allowances to Paramount Chiefs and Queen Mothers increased from GH¢1,200 to GH¢3,000 respectively, with six quarters duly paid since inception of this government,” he said.
The Minister said the government was also exploring ways to use resources from the local government system to support traditional councils.
He explained that many Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) depended heavily on the cooperation of paramount chiefs and traditional councils to effectively implement development programmes.
Mr Ayariga said strengthening support for traditional authorities was therefore important to improving collaboration between the traditional leadership and local government structures.
