The government is preparing to invest in engineered landfill sites across regional capitals and waste transfer stations in Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) as part of efforts to overhaul Ghana’s sanitation infrastructure.
Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister, Mahama Ayariga, disclosed this at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, October 5, 2026.
Mr Ayariga said the Ministry had advanced work on the design of a nationwide sanitation strategy and was awaiting detailed cost estimates from the relevant technical teams for the construction of the landfill sites and transfer stations.
Under the proposed plan, three landfill sites are being considered for the Greater Accra area, while two each are planned for Greater Kumasi and Sekondi-Takoradi.
He added that waste transfer stations would also be developed in every MMDA to improve the collection and management of solid waste.
The Minister said the infrastructure would be complemented by investments in waste collection vehicles, tricycles and household bins.
Electronic payment systems would also be introduced to make waste collection services more seamless, he said.
Mr Ayariga said the planned investments were aimed at significantly reducing the cost of waste management while improving sanitation across the country.
