The Member of Parliament for Tano North, Dr Gideon Boako, has announced plans to provide free WiFi services across communities in his constituency as part of efforts to improve internet access and create opportunities for residents.
The proposed initiative, which will be known as the MP’s Constituency WiFi project, is expected to make internet connectivity available to people within designated coverage areas without requiring them to pay for data.
The initiative is intended to benefit the youth and other constituents who depend on the internet for education, business, communication and access to information.
Dr Boako said the initiative was motivated by his desire to make life easier for his constituents, particularly young people, by improving their access to essential resources.
Drawing from his personal experience, the MP emphasised the importance of education in shaping his life and expressed his commitment to creating opportunities for others to succeed.
“I want to do what can help you make things easier for you because I know if not for education, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” he said.
The Tano North legislator highlighted the difficulties students face in accessing online educational materials, especially during school vacations when they may not have access to school facilities.
He noted that the growing dependence on digital learning resources means that students who cannot afford internet data risk falling behind their peers.
“One thing I have also noted is that our kids in school, when they come on vacation, they are unable to learn because now education and learning are all on the internet, and the phones the children are using need internet, which must be bought,” he stated.
Dr Boako stressed, however, that the planned initiative would not be restricted to students but would serve all residents within the WiFi network’s coverage areas.
Traders, entrepreneurs, young people and other community members are also expected to benefit from the service by accessing online business opportunities, information and communication platforms.
Outlining his plans, he said: “By the grace of God, I know we have a lot of communities within the Tano North constituency. I am coming up with the MP’s Constituency WiFi, and everyone within the internet catchment can use it for free without paying anything.”
