A 20-year-old suspected armed robber, Muntari Munumi, has died after collapsing while leading police officers to arrest his alleged accomplices in the Upper East Region.
Munumi had been re-arrested with an M16 A2 assault rifle, three live rounds of ammunition and five expended empty shells following an alleged robbery at Sapeliga Junction in Kobore.
According to a statement issued by the Upper East Regional Police Command on Thursday, October 22, 2026, preliminary investigations indicate that two victims returning home from Bazua after work were attacked at Sapeliga Junction.
The suspect allegedly robbed them of a Royal motorbike, three mobile phones and GH¢1,820 in cash.
The victims fought back after Munumi reportedly fired several rounds without hitting his targets, eventually overpowering him and seizing the weapon.
The statement said, “The victims engaged the suspect in a fierce struggle and succeeded in taking the weapon from suspect Muntari after he had fired several rounds and missed his target.”
The victims subsequently contacted the Googo Neighbourhood Watch Committee, whose members mobilised, arrested the suspect and handed him over to the Police with the weapon.
The Police said Munumi later disclosed the identities of his alleged accomplices and the source of the weapons used in their operations.
He reportedly agreed to lead officers to arrest them but collapsed during the journey after complaining of dizziness.
The statement said, “While on the way, the suspect complained of dizziness and suddenly fell unconscious. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The body has since been deposited at the Morgue for preservation and autopsy.”
The Police did not state the cause of death. An autopsy is expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
The Upper East Regional Police Command said efforts were underway to arrest the suspect’s alleged accomplices.
“Efforts are underway to arrest his accomplices to face the law,” the statement said.
The Command also commended the victims, the Googo Neighbourhood Watch Committee and the Chief of Sapeliga for their support.
“The Command commends the victims, the Googo Neighborhood watch Committee and the Chief of Sapeliga for their support,” the statement added.
