Waste collectors using tricycles in parts of the Ashanti Region have warned of an impending sanitation crisis following repeated equipment breakdowns at the Oti landfill site.
The operators say they are currently unable to offload collected refuse, leading to severe disruptions in their daily operations.
“The situation here is bad. Yesterday, even if you bring your car to branch to the village, you don’t get the chance to go. It’s not our problem — it’s the problem of the landfill,” one frustrated collector lamented.
The waste collectors have therefore appealed to local authorities to urgently address the situation by providing functional equipment, particularly a new machine, to restore operations at the site.
They warned that continued disruptions could result in serious public health risks if refuse continues to pile up in communities.
