President John Dramani Mahama has called on African leaders to move beyond historic political solidarity and deliver tangible economic benefits for their citizens.
Addressing the National Assembly of Zambia on Thursday, February 5, 2026, President Mahama said Africa’s next battle is not independence, but prosperity.

“The responsibility of our generation is clear, to translate historic solidarity and political goodwill into concrete economic and social dividends for our peoples,” he stated.

Mahama noted that while Africa’s founding leaders fought for political emancipation, today’s leaders must pursue economic transformation that creates jobs and improves living standards.

“Our forebears won us independence and nationhood. Now we must win the fight for economic transformation and prosperity for our people,” he said.
He added that the current global environment, marked by declining development assistance and rising geopolitical tensions, makes Africa’s self-reliance even more urgent.
