The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that government has finalized plans to pay the remaining 6,500 nurses and midwives whose financial clearance expired in December 2024.
Addressing the media in Accra on Monday, October 13, Mr. Akandoh disclosed that over 7,000 out of the total 13,500 affected nurses and midwives have already received their salaries, with the rest now cleared for immediate payment.
“The latest in the media is the 13,500 nurses and midwives whose clearance had expired in December 2024 before they were posted. The government has since paid over 7,000 out of the 13,500, with about 6,500 awaiting payment,” he said.
He explained that the Ministry, in collaboration with the **Ministry of Finance**, conducted a comprehensive validation and reconciliation exercise to ensure that all affected individuals were properly verified before payment.
“I am happy to announce that, with the support of the government, clearance has been obtained for the payment of all the remaining 6,500. The Ministry has instructed that the processes for the payments of these officers start immediately without delay at the various agencies of the Ministry,” Mr. Akandoh added.
He reaffirmed government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of health workers and ensuring that such delays do not recur.
“The Ministry wishes to assure all health workers and stakeholders that the Ministry is putting in place measures as part of a broader agenda to strengthen Ghana’s health system and ensure the welfare of its workforce, and to avoid these mishaps in future,” the Minister said.
