The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has officially endorsed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, ahead of the 2024 general elections.
The endorsement comes following the passing of the party’s founder, Akua Donkor, who had originally been the GFP’s flagbearer. Her running mate, Philip Kwabena Agyemang (Roman Fada), was named as the new presidential candidate but was later disqualified over alleged irregularities.
During a press briefing on Wednesday, December 4, the Deputy General Secretary of the GFP expressed the party’s support for Mahama, describing him as a “savior” for the country. “The Ghana Freedom Party is supporting the candidature of H.E. John Dramani Mahama on Saturday [December 7]. He’s going to capture power to save Ghanaians,” he stated, emphasising that the decision was made without any external influence.
He further explained that the decision followed extensive consultations and careful consideration of the manifestos of various political parties, including independent candidates. He noted that the GFP’s late endorsement was a result of the party’s thorough examination of the policies.
The Deputy General Secretary highlighted that the late Akua Donkor was particularly passionate about women’s empowerment, a commitment reflected in the NDC’s campaign promise to establish a Women’s Development Bank. He also pointed to Mahama’s pledge to provide free tertiary education for first-year students and the physically challenged, policies that align with Donkor’s vision, especially given her own struggles with formal education.
“The policies and vision of the NDC are in line with the Ghana Freedom Party,” he concluded.
