An Accra High Court has sentenced Yaw Anokye Frimpong, the 22-year-old man, accused of killing the two African-American women at Akwamufie in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region, in May 2015 to death by hanging.
Frimpong was found guilty by a seven-member jury after he had confessed to killing the two African-American women.
The two – Nzinga Janna, 69, and Mame Lena Diop, 75, were killed at their home and buried in a nearby bush at Akwamufie on May 5, 2016.
The murder was discovered after their neighbours who had not seen them the following day got alarmed.
When their rooms were broken into, a blood-stained club was found lying on the floor of Jaana’s room as well as a rubber bag also covered with blood stains and stashed in a dustbin.
A report was made to the police and their bodies were discovered in a shallow grave near a farm within the community after extensive search.
Six suspects were arrested in connection with the case including a driver, Yaw Anokye Frimpong, who later confessed that he single-handedly committed the offence.
Delivering her judgment, the Judge, Justice Merley Afua Wood, asked God to have mercy on the soul of the accused as he was about to face death.
He becomes the first person to be sentenced to death by hanging since 1993 when when then-president John Rawlings ordered the execution of 12 convicts via a firing squad.
