Akweley Ocloo urges Zoomlion to prepare for 24-hour economy in waste management

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, has called on waste management giant Zoomlion Ghana Limited to gear up for implementing the government’s flagship 24-hour Economy policy.

According to her, the waste management sector is a key priority under the policy, ensuring continuous cleaning, waste collection, and disposal, particularly at night, to maintain a cleaner national capital.

Hon. Ocloo made the call during a strategic engagement with the management and staff of the Jospong Group (Zoomlion Ghana Limited) as part of her familiarization tour.

She reaffirmed her commitment to fostering partnerships that will drive sustainable sanitation solutions, emphasizing her resolve to leave a lasting legacy of cleanliness in the region.

Ghana’s urban population has surged from 50.9% in 2010 to 56.7% in 2021, with the Greater Accra Region now home to 5,455,692 people, according to the 2021 Population and Housing Census.

This number is expected to rise as more rural dwellers migrate to the city in search of jobs and livelihoods.

The scale and speed of urbanization continue to challenge local authorities in ensuring effective planning and waste management.

Globally, annual waste generation is expected to increase by 73% from 2020 levels to 3.88 billion tonnes by 2050.

In Ghana, about 12,710 tonnes of solid waste is generated daily, yet about 10% is properly collected and disposed of, with plastic waste making up a significant portion.

During the meeting, the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, reaffirmed his company’s unwavering commitment to supporting the government’s sanitation agenda.

He assured the Minister that Zoomlion is ready to deploy additional machinery and services to improve waste management in Accra.

The initiative aligns with President John Mahama’s vision of a 24-hour economy, ensuring round-the-clock sanitation operations to enhance cleanliness in the region.

Zoomlion staff expressed their appreciation to the Minister for prioritizing stakeholder engagement in the sanitation sector.

They pledged their full support in realizing the goal of making Greater Accra the cleanest region in Ghana.
