Pan-African activist and lawyer, Ama Governor, has issued a rallying call for Ghanaians to join the three-day stop illegal mining also known as galamsey demonstration which began on October 3, 2024.
In a letter addressed to her fellow activists, she stressed the importance of unity in combating the devastation caused by galamsey across Ghana.
Responding to the ongoing #FreeTheCitizens demonstration, Ama began her message with a call to solidarity: “Dear Comrades, when I say ‘Aluta!’ You respond ‘Cononua!’”
She urged all participants to stand firm in their fight to protect the environment and preserve the health and well-being of Ghanaians.
Highlighting the severe health risks posed by galamsey, Ama drew attention to the suffering of people living in mining areas, particularly women.
She expressed concern, that chemicals used in illegal mining have led to serious health issues, including birth defects, where women are giving birth to children with deformities due to womb damage caused by toxic substances.
“The resources in our country are being destroyed,” she wrote, stressing that the impact of galamsey goes beyond environmental damage, affecting agriculture, water bodies, and human lives.
As a young activist, Ama is demanding accountability and strong leadership to bring an end to illegal mining.
Citing the legacy of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ama said, “He would timidly wail at what has become of our Ghana.”
She expressed her commitment, alongside other young activists, to continue the fight against galamsey with the same determination that their forefathers and foremothers displayed in the struggle for independence.
The Stop Galamsey movement represents a growing effort to protect Ghana’s natural resources and ensure a healthier future for all citizens.
