Apple has released its newest product: a new cleaning cloth for its displays.
At $ 19 or the same pound, it’s way more expensive than many of its competitors. For example, on Amazon, one seller has 20 microfiber cleaning wipes for just £ 6.69.
But it claims to have special features beyond any regular cleaning wipe – and Apple warns that using other wipes on its £ 5,499 displays could damage them.
Like any other Apple product, it can be purchased directly from the Apple Store, where it has its own listing. Like other Apple products, it has its own special features as well as a “What’s in the Box” section that explains that the polishing cloth does not come with any accessories.
“The polishing cloth is made of soft, non-abrasive material and cleans every Apple display, including glass with a nanostructure, safely and effectively,” says the description.
“Nano-Textured Glass” is a screen design that is featured on Apple’s higher end computer screens like the Pro Display XDR, where it costs nearly £ 1,000. The screen has tiny etchings, which means that it will look matte without the lower contrast that is often found on such displays.
Apple’s Pro Display XDR support articles warn that cleaning the screen with a non-Apple cloth can damage the screen. The Pro Display XDR, which costs £ 4,599, comes with its own official Apple cleaning cloth.
The cloth can also be used on any other Apple display.
Apple launched the cloth right after an event that unveiled the AirPods 3 and two versions of the MacBook Pro that feature new and much faster versions of their own chips. The cloth was not mentioned during the actual live stream.
According to its “Compatibility List,” it is not compatible with any of these new devices, but that’s likely because they don’t need to be released yet. Otherwise, the list includes almost every current Apple product with a display without an indication that there is a product with which it is incompatible.
