Political Scientist and Director of Center for European Studies at the University of Ghana, Dr. Asah Asante stated that the Speaker’s decision to adjourn parliament would allow time for meaningful dialogue and help address this pressing issue.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, announced the indefinite adjournment of parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday, October 22.
This announcement follows exchanges between lawmakers from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding which caucus holds the Majority.
Speaker Bagbin when announcing the adjournment disclosed that he had received a communication from the Supreme Court directing him to stay his earlier ruling, which had declared four parliamentary seats vacant.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Dr. Asante expressed that this is not a time to trigger a recall of parliament but rather a time for dialogue.
“So this is a time that they will put their heads together and try to chart a path that will bring us peace. And at the end of the day, calm will be restored to Parliament for government business to continue. So I was surprised that with this knowledge, we are now seeing or hearing certain decisions by the majority, for instance, saying that they are going to trigger a process to get the Speaker back. That for me, takes away that beautiful aspect of the conversation of consensus building because once you do that, you bring the Speaker back. I believe that this is the time of dialogue.” he stated.
He also commended both sides of parliament for their comportment during Tuesday sitting and urged their leaders to sit down and have discussions to help ensure effective resolutions.
