CDD-Ghana cautions against politicizing petitions to remove EC leadership

CDD-Ghana warns that petitions seeking the removal of Electoral Commission leadership should remain focused on accountability, not political agendas.

The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has warned that petitions seeking the removal of the Electoral Commission (EC) leadership should not be interpreted as a politically motivated attack on individuals because of their party affiliations.

Speaking on Starr FM with Naa Dedei Tettey, Paul Nana Kwabena Aborampah Mensah, Programme Manager for Security Sector Governance at CDD-Ghana, said, “It should be genuine, and the process must be applicable, not because hidden beliefs or hidden promises to undo what one has done when we were in opposition.”

He further noted that statements made during the 2024 election campaign could shape public perception of government actions.

“Even if you have a good intention, because you’ve already harbored a negative perspective and promised to do something, whatever happens afterwards, people will read into what you already said before coming to power,” he explained.

The caution comes in the wake of several petitions against EC Chair Jean Mensa and her deputies, alleging mismanagement and calling for their removal. President John Mahama has forwarded the petitions to Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie for preliminary assessment.

Mensah emphasized the need to distinguish between genuine accountability and politically driven actions.

“We need that to make sure that institutions account for their stewardship. But we also wanted us to be careful so that we don’t build institutions that people serving those institutions will be shaky anytime there’s a change in government,” he said.
