The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has instructed all Colleges of Education to remain open in spite of a prolonged nationwide strike action by the Colleges of Education Teachers of Ghana (CETAG).
The Commission noted that it had not finalised any decision to close down the schools although academic work had been suspended for months now.
“The Commission, as of today, 16th August 2924, has not reached such a conclusion, neither has it been directed by the Honourable Minister of Education to do same. As a result, all of the 46 Colleges of Education should stay open until further notice,” the press release read.
Since 14th June, 2024, CETAG has been on strike over frustrations with government on non-payments of arbitrary awards.
Despite series of talks involving both sides, the National Labour Commission (NLC) and other key stakeholders, the industrial action has still been in place.
GTEC, in the statement revealed some measures had been made towards improving conditions of service of college education teachers.
Meanwhile, the Commission says it will await directives from the Minister of Education on payments of the teachers for August.
