The Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) is urging government to offer support and relief packages to private schools affected by the Akosombo dam spillage floods that disrupted livelihoods and left thousands displaced.
The President of GNAPS, Prof. Damascus Tuurosong alleged that several private schools in the Volta region that suffered from the devastating floods have been neglected by the government.
He says relief interventions by government since the disaster have been directed to only state-owned schools in an attempt to revive the schools and restore effective academic activities.
He made the comments in an interview with Starrfm.com.gh when he led a delegation to donate an undisclosed amount of money and other stationeries including books totaling GHC50,000 on behalf of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) to support private schools affected in the three Tongu Districts of Volta region.
He said, “Now we have a disaster situation and in a disaster situation, you do not ask what type of schools the children attend, you go ahead and assist all children, all Ghanaian children who are attending all manner of institutions. But here within the Volta region, what we have observed is that, attention is being given to state schools, public schools to the neglect of the private schools in this disaster situation.”
Prof. Tuurosong is demanding adequate aid from the government similar to what is offered the state-owned schools in the affected communities.
Though schools in the affected areas have resumed for academic activities weeks ago, some of these schools continue to suffer infrastructure problems having lost some of their classrooms to the floods.
