NDC Members of Parliament in the Volta Region have resurrected the controversy surrounding President Akufo-Addo’s answer to the Paramount Chief of Aflao who demanded completion of a Community Day School in his area.
Speaking at a Press Conference, the Member of Parliament for Ketu South, Dzifa Gomashie stated that President Akufo-Addo’s response to Torgbui Amenya Fiti could be described as discriminatory.
“The respected traditional ruler only advocated the abandoned E-Block in his Community to be completed so his people will have fair access to education as citizens and volatile tax payers. That wasn’t too much to ask. Torgbui Adzonugaga Amenya Fiti V of the Aflao Traditional Area deserves praise for prioritizing education by speaking against the culture of abandoning inherited projects.
“He does not deserve such disrespect from the President of the Republic of Ghana. The President’s conduct which we do not see him exhibit against other chiefs of the country is the total affront to the entire Volta Region and the Aflao Traditional Area in particular. We demand a retraction and apology from H. E the President,” she reiterated.
The NDC MPs want the National House of Chiefs to show concern as they disclosed their constituents are piling up pressure on them to get the president to eat back his words.
President Akufo-Addo in an interview on Accra based Peace FM last week, asked the chief to complete the project if he believes government is unduly delaying operationalization of the school which was started in 2015 by the Mahama administration.
Many have condemned the president’s comments but government officials have explained that the comments were made in a jest.
Leading the caucus to address the media in parliament, the MP for the Ketu South Dzifa Gomashie disclosed a go fund me account will be opened for indigenes and Ghanaians to contribute towards the completion of the project if the government does not discharge its responsibility
The North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the MPs in the region are under immense pressure to demand an apology from the President. He called on the National House of Chiefs to take an interest in the matter.
Mr. Ablakwa warned that the caucus will deploy other means to seek redress if the president fails to apologize.
