The Abuakwa South Municipal Assembly with Kibi as its Capital is reportedly broke following the demarcation and carving out of the newly established Abuakwa North Municipality.
All major commercial entities which generated huge revenue for the then East Akyem Municipality fell within the demarcation of the new Municipality leaving very little economic opportunities for the Abuakwa South Municipality.
The ban on Small Scale Mining, according to the Assembly also affected the local economy.
This situation, coupled with the delay in the release of the Assembly’s share of the common fund for the last quarter of 2018 has crippled the Assembly compelling it to beg corporate bodies and institutions to help it undertake some developmental projects.
The Assembly has written about 100 letters to corporate bodies including Kasapreko, GNPC, Goil among others to help it carry out some developmental projects as it initiated measures to fix the current financial challenges.
“I have earlier explained our predicament regarding finances following the carving out of the Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly. It is in the light of this that we have conceded that we cannot tackle our developmental challenges in isolation so there is the need to solicit assistance from other institutions and Corporate Ghana.
“Our conviction is that, if we do 100 applications for people to come and support, out of the hundred we are likely to get 10,” the Municipal Chief Executive, Kojo Ofori Sarfo revealed this during the Assembly’s meeting in Kibi.
The MCE stated that some aggressive revenue generation measures initiated have started yielding positive results adding that for instance, at the end of March 31, 2019, the Assembly has been able to generate Ghc177, 510 as against expenditure of Ghc272, 220.
The MCE mentioned that the Assembly is mobilizing resources to upgrade the Akyem Apedwa market, construct Apedwa Truck Terminal, tap and develop some tourism potentials in the Atewa Forest Reserves to generate revenue for the Assembly.
