The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has taken a decisive step in its ongoing nationwide revenue recovery drive by disconnecting power supply to the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), citing an unpaid electricity debt of approximately GHS1 billion.
The disconnection, which took place on Tuesday, June 16, 2025, marks one of the most high-profile actions in ECG’s efforts to reclaim funds owed by both public and private institutions. According to officials, the GWCL had not settled its electricity bills in over seven months.
Footage shared cited by Starr FM captured members of the ECG team visibly frustrated by the conditions at the site. One member was heard criticizing the lack of metering and poor energy practices.
The move adds further urgency to Ghana’s growing energy sector crisis.
Energy and Green Transition Minister, John Jinapor, had earlier raised the alarm about GWCL’s outstanding bills during a parliamentary briefing in May.
He revealed that despite continuing to produce and distribute water for sale, GWCL had not paid a single cedi for electricity over a seven-month period.
