The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) has denied reports alleging that it authorised the sale of livestock on the Kanda Highway, road medians, and other principal streets within the Accra Metropolis.
In a press release dated May 29, 2026, the Council described the reports carried by some media outlets as inaccurate and misleading, stressing that neither the Council nor the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, granted permission to any individual, group, or association to engage in such activities.
According to the Council, it has rather taken steps to address the growing practice of displaying and selling livestock along the Kanda Highway and other major roads in the capital.
The Council explained that after becoming aware of the situation, it convened a stakeholder engagement involving officials of the Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly, traditional authorities, livestock operators, and other relevant stakeholders to discuss the matter.
During the meeting, concerns were raised about the safety risks associated with the practice, including dangers to motorists, pedestrians, and the animals, as well as its impact on traffic flow and the orderly use of public spaces.
As a result, operators were directed to remove their livestock from the affected locations and relocate their activities to designated and more appropriate areas.
The GARCC said it was therefore surprising that reports had emerged suggesting that it had sanctioned an activity it had actively sought to stop.
The Council reiterated its commitment to public safety, environmental sanitation, and the effective management of public spaces across the Greater Accra Region.
It also called on the media organisations that carried the reports to correct what it described as an erroneous impression and provide the public with accurate information regarding the Council’s position.
Furthermore, the Council demanded an immediate retraction and an unqualified public apology from GHOne TV, alleging that the reports had caused reputational damage to both the Regional Coordinating Council and the Greater Accra Regional Minister.
The Council indicated that it reserves the right to pursue legal action should the alleged false and defamatory publications remain uncorrected.
It subsequently advised the public to disregard any claims that it had authorised the sale of livestock on the Kanda Highway, road medians, or any principal streets within the region, maintaining that no such approval had been granted.
