The Minister for Defence, Dr. Omane Boamah, has revealed that the Ghana Armed Forces will construct the main Awaso-Takoradi bauxite road in partnership with the Ghana Bauxite Company.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, July 21, 2025, Dr. Boamah said the 180-kilometre stretch, which serves as the primary route for transporting Ghana’s bauxite to the Takoradi Port, has deteriorated due to heavy haulage over the years.
“Even before DIHOC [Defence Industries Holding Company] unleashes its fullest potential, the Ghana Armed Forces is presently partnering with the Ghana Bauxite Company in a 180-kilometre road works on the main Awaso-Takoradi corridor, which serves as the primary road for transporting Ghana’s bauxite to the Takoradi port, a port protected by the Ghana Armed Forces,” he stated.
He explained that when work commences, it will demonstrate the military’s engineering expertise and long-standing commitment to supporting national development.
Dr. Boamah added that in the coming weeks, details of this partnership will be announced, along with a groundbreaking ceremony to officially mark the commencement of works.
He further disclosed that through DIHOC, the Ghana Armed Forces will form strategic partnerships to ensure the accelerated execution of the six-lane Accra-Kumasi Expressway announced by President Mahama in the Ashanti Region last week.
“Who else can Ghanaians trust to execute road construction day and night within a 24-hour economy if not the Ghana Armed Forces?” he asked.
On food security, the minister indicated that DIHOC is working towards large-scale commercial farming projects aligned with the Feed Ghana programme to ensure sustainable food supply for troops as part of Ghana’s commitment to food sovereignty.
Dr. Boamah also cautioned the public against enlistment and recruitment fraud, stressing that while most perpetrators are external, there remain a few collaborators within the military.
“The Ghana Armed Forces must be a force of excellence, integrity, opportunity, and national integration,” he emphasised.
