Ghana has deported three Israeli nationals in response to what it describes as the ill-treatment and unjustified deportation of three Ghanaians by Israeli authorities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.
In a statement on Wednesday, December 10, the government said the decision followed earlier incidents at Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport, where Ghanaian travellers were detained and deported without cause.
That episode, which involved both officials and civilians, had already triggered strong diplomatic protests from Accra.
According to the Foreign Ministry, the three Israelis were deported shortly after arriving in Ghana as a reciprocal measure.
The Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Israeli Embassy in Accra was immediately summoned, as the Israeli Ambassador is currently out of the country.
Despite the escalation, both governments have agreed to pursue an amicable resolution of the matter.
Ghana reiterated that while it values its longstanding relations with Israel and other friendly nations, it expects Ghanaian citizens abroad to be treated with dignity and respect, just as Ghana does for foreign nationals within its borders.
The government stressed that it remains committed to safeguarding the rights and dignity of its citizens and will not hesitate to act when those rights are undermined.
