The Ghana Telecom University College (GTUC) has launched a training programme for the security services in the Eastern Region, aimed at equipping security personnel in basic Information Technology skills, ensuring their efficiency and efficacy in combating emerging cyber-related crimes.
Speaking at the launch of the programme in Koforidua, the Acting President of GTUC, Nana Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa said the University is committing a total tuition amount of GH¢500,000 to train more than 1000 security personnel from the Police ,Immigration, Prisons and Fire Services in basic IT skills to be technologically inclined over a course of three years.
He explained that the training to be run in batches will focus on basics in computer health safety and maintenance, Information and communication (cyber), word processing, spreadsheet and presentation. These will be advanced with additional training in Cyber Security and Forensic.
According to him, the “tuition-free 2 months basic IT training in the Eastern Region is only a pilot programme and we at GTUC intend to roll it across our regional campuses (Ho, Takoradi and Kumasi) to help make our security services ready to fulfil the government agenda of safe and prosperous Ghana beyond Aid.”
The Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Samuel Nuertey Ayertey said the global revolution of Information Technology has been accompanied with sophisticated crimes which require highly IT skilled security services to combat the emerging crimes.
He said: “Our security personnel need to be equipped with the requisite skills and technology if they have to be relevant in our pursuit to combat crime.”
