The Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS) has sorganised the maiden edition of “The Digital Secretary,” a one-day virtual training programme designed exclusively for General Secretaries of Students’ Representative Councils (SRCs) across GUPS member institutions.
Held on September 25, 2026, the programme ran under the theme “Leveraging Digital Tools, AI & Automation for Effective Secretariat Management” marks the first known GUPS initiative dedicated specifically to the professional development of SRC General Secretaries.
The training which was organised under the auspices of 24th General Secretary of GUPS, Elsie Fafa Amelordzi focused on the critical administrative responsibilities of General Secretaries, including documentation, correspondence, records management, communication, meeting administration and the preservation of institutional memory.
Participants received practical guidance on integrating digital tools, artificial intelligence and automation into their daily work to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
Jeremiah Awulikie-Ayi moderated the sessions, guiding discussions and ensuring smooth interaction among participants.
Resource persons included Mr. Baah Kusi, an Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain Engineer, and Mr. Tomison Farinola, an Administrative and Legal Operations Specialist at OAK Chambers who offered insights into applying technology and AI to administrative and secretariat functions.
The programme highlighted the growing need for student leaders to develop digital competencies as governance increasingly depends on electronic communication, digital documentation, virtual meetings, data management and automated workflows. By targeting General Secretaries, it addressed an often-overlooked pillar of student leadership — the professional management of the secretariat, which serves as the administrative backbone of every SRC.
The successful launch of “The Digital Secretary” positions the GUPS General Secretariat as a champion of modern, efficient and technology-driven student administration. Organisers expect the inaugural edition to spark further discussions on digital transformation, AI literacy and innovation within student governance structures.
