Independent Presidential Candidate Kofi Koranteng has expressed outrage over the galamsey menace and its devastating effects on citizens.
Speaking on GHOne TV‘s State of Affairs show, hosted by Lantam Papanko, he lamented the widespread destruction of the environment and water bodies caused by the menace.
Commenting on the recent Democracy Hub protest and his reason for attending, Mr. Koranteng said, “Why wouldn’t I be here? I’m Ghanaian, a very concerned citizen. If any citizen is paying attention, they should have been at the protest.”
“Galamsey has caused our lands to degrade, polluted our water to the point where it can’t be drunk anymore. It’s killing us. We spend billions on free senior high school, only to spend more to kill our children through environmental pollution,” he lamented.
Painting a gloomy picture for the country and its citizens if the menace is not curbed, he said, “In the next five to ten years, half of our country may suffer from cancer or neurological problems due to toxicity. It’s ridiculous. We need to stop this nonsense.”
“Everybody in Ghana should be outraged. We’ve allowed galamsey to decimate our lands and poison our waters for far too long,” he noted.
The three-day Democracy Hub protests was to draw the government’s attention to the devastating impact of illegal mining and the need for urgent action. The protests, which resulted in roadblocks and the obstruction of traffic at key intersections, led to heightened tensions between the demonstrators and law enforcement resulting in mass arrests.
