The Member of Parliament for Jirapa, Cletus Seidu Dapilah, has raised concerns about former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s performance in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) recent internal contest, warning that the outcome reflects underlying challenges rather than a moment for celebration.
Speaking on GHToday with Lily Mohammed on Monday, February 2, 2026, the Jirapa MP argued that the results should prompt caution within the party as it positions itself for the 2028 general elections.
“This is not the result an opposition party should be jubilating or celebrating about,” Dapilah said, noting that Dr. Bawumia’s share of the vote declined from 61 percent in a previous contest to 56 percent.

According to him, the drop signals internal dissatisfaction and raises questions about the former Vice President’s level of support within the party’s base.
“If you check, he dropped from 61 to 56 percent. That should be a worry to them,” he stated. “It should tell you that internally, Dr. Bawumia is not popular within his party.”
Dapilah further pointed to the number of party members who did not support Dr. Bawumia’s bid, describing it as significant and deserving of serious reflection by the party’s leadership.
“There are about 85,000 people who do not believe Dr. Bawumia should lead the party, and that should be a worry to them,” he added.
