The leaked audio tape which has some senior police officers plotting to get Dr. George Akuffo Dampare removed as Inspector General of Police (IGP) and pledging to help the governing NPP break the 8 popped up in Parliament Wednesday.
The assurance from Interior Minister Ambrose Dery that the IGP will not be removed has done very little to convince the Minority.
Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah sought special dispensation under order 72 to raise the matter on the floor.
The Ellembelle MP prayed the house to investigate the matter since it bothers on the peace and security of the state and the sanctity of its elections.
Minister for Interior Ambrose Dery took the opportunity to explain the basis for the interview he granted the media on Tuesday which has been flagged by the Minority. Mr. Dery insisted that the Nana Akufo-Addo administration will not do anything to compromise the peace and security of the country.
Ranking Member for the committee on Defence and Interior, James Agalga described the contents of the tape as treasonable.
Okaikoi Central MP, Patrick Yaw Boamah questioned the basis linking the content of the leaked audio to the outcome of the 2024 elections. According to him, no single IGP can determine the outcome of an election.
Tamale South MP and former minority leader Haruna Iddrisu demanded a forensic investigation into the tape to protect the integrity of the police service and the sanctity of elections.
Minister for Local Government and MP for Okere Daniel Botwe further shredded into the arguments of the minority that there are attempts to rig the 2024 elections using the police. According to him, past political events do not support such claims.
MP for Asunafo South Eric Opoku however challenged the assertion of the local government minister. According to him, state security apparatus can and has been used to influence outcomes of elections. He questioned the pushback from the majority if they indeed have nothing to hide.
Minister for interior in his wrap up comments indicated he was not against any investigation however claims must not be made government is seeking to subvert the will of the people come 2024.
Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin consequently announced a probe into the leaked audio.
Mr. Alban Bagbin however asked the deputy Minority leader Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah to present to him details of his request in writing so as to determine the terms of this probe.
