The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced a step towards clearing its backlog of unprinted Ghana Cards, confirming the receipt of 700,000 blank cards from its technical partners.
According to a Press release dated February 17, these cards will be dedicated to fulfilling pending requests for first-time card issuances, replacements, and personal information updates, some of which date back to 2023.
“The National Identification Authority (NIA) wishes to announce for the information of the public that it has on Monday, 17th February 2025, received into stores a total of Seven Hundred Thousand (700,000) pieces of blank cards from its Technical Partners after weeks of negotiations initiated by the Ag. Executive Secretary,” the press release stated.
The NIA is prioritizing the government’s objective to provide Ghana Cards to all citizens aged 15 and above. “In line with government’s objective of ensuring that Ghanaians aged 15 and above have the Ghana Cards for the purposes of identification and verification, the Ag. Executive Secretary has constituted a technical team to expedite the printing of the backlogs and to oversee its distribution to the various district offices for on-ward issuance,” the release explained.
The NIA also used the opportunity to address the issue of uncollected cards, revealing that a substantial number remain unclaimed at their offices. “The public is once again reminded of more than 600,000 Ghana cards that have been printed but remain uncollected at the various regional and district offices since 2018. A team is developing an efficient system to help distribute these cards for their intended use,” the release noted.
