Residents of Kasoa 94 in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region are mourning the tragic death of a nine-year-old schoolboy, Mohammed Abdul Kadir, who reportedly fell from a deteriorated bridge in the community.
The incident has reignited concerns over the poor state of infrastructure in the area, with residents describing the bridge as a “death trap” that has posed a danger to lives for years.
According to eyewitnesses, the young boy was attempting to cross the bridge when he accidentally fell into the deep drain beneath it. Despite frantic efforts by nearby residents to rescue him, he could not be saved and was later pronounced dead.
The tragedy has left the community devastated, with residents expressing anger over what they describe as years of neglect by authorities despite repeated complaints about the hazardous condition of the bridge.
Residents say the structure serves as a major access route for schoolchildren, traders, and commuters, yet its weakened and damaged state continues to endanger lives.
They claim several appeals to the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly for repairs have yielded little or no action.
Speaking to the media, some residents blamed the Assembly for failing to prioritize the safety of residents, particularly children who rely on the bridge daily.
They have called on the Municipal Chief Executive for Awutu Senya East, Seth Sabah Serwonoo-Banini, to urgently intervene and ensure the reconstruction of the bridge.
The grieving residents are also appealing to the government and other relevant authorities to implement immediate safety measures to prevent similar incidents.
According to them, unless swift action is taken to address the deteriorating structure, more lives could be at risk.
