Former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has officially filed his nomination to contest the party’s presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The filing, which took place at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Thursday, August 28, 2025, drew massive crowds of party supporters clad in the party’s red, white, and blue colours.
The atmosphere was electrified with brass band music, chants, and dancing, turning the event into a carnival-like show of political strength.

Dr. Bawumia was accompanied by his wife, Samira Bawumia, party executives, and loyalists who described him as the most prepared candidate to lead the party into the next general elections.
Addressing the gathering, he pledged to run a clean, issues-based campaign anchored on digital transformation, economic growth, industrialisation, and job creation for the youth.
“The NPP and Ghana are demanding for a leader who embodies the values of this tradition. Deep intellect, humility, respect for all persons, unity, courage, foresightand resilience,” Dr. Bawumia declared.
He emphasised that the flagbearer race was not only about selecting a candidate but about protecting the soul of the NPP, warning against divisions that could deepen inequality.

Dr. Bawumia joins a growing list of aspirants who have filed to contest the primaries, including former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, who was the first to submit his forms on August 26, and Abetifi MP and former Agric Minister Bryan Acheampong.
Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong is also expected to be one of his closest rivals.
The party opened nominations on July 29 and closed them today, August 28, with the full list of qualified aspirants expected to be published on October 8.
The primaries have been slated for January 31, 2026, in what is expected to be one of the most competitive contests in the party’s history.
