The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has revealed Parliament will its current sitting consider recommendations contained in the report of the Constitutional Review Committee’ (CRC) set up by President Mahama.
The committee which main task was to review the current constitution and make suggestions that will strengthen the course democracy among other recommendations proposed the extension of the presidential term from 4 to 5 years.
Welcoming MPs back to Parliament on Thursday, May 21, 2026, the Speaker said the August House will at its current sitting consider its recommendations.
“The Constitution of the Republic of Ghana Amendment Bill 2025. This bill has been with Parliament since 2021. The Council of State has also submitted its advice to the House through me. I will process it for presentation to the House for reference to the appropriate committee for speedy consideration and report to the House,” he said.
Speaker Bagbin further described the bill as “a crucial bill that needs to be processed transparently to tap the collective wisdom of all stakeholders to ensure ownership and ease of implementation.”
“You know we did not complete this bill in the 8th Parliament, and as the 8th Parliament expired, it expired with all its business. And so, these have to be reintroduced, and this is a private member’s bill. So, it has to go through the whole process, right there from the sponsors up to date, and the Constitution says we have to refer it to the Council of State. The earlier Council of State rendered its advice. This Council of State has also rendered its advice, and I have to bring that to the notice of the committee so that through the deliberation of the committee we can do justice to the bill,” he said.
He also assured MPs that he “will be compelled to give an opinion, which should also be referred to the committee because this is a bipartisan bill, and all government policies, both the previous and the current.”
