Former deputy Interior Minister James Agalga has described the reshuffle conducted in the Police service by the Inspector General of Police as an admission of crisis.
The IGP David Asante-Apeatu on Thursday reshuffled the top brass of the force following the upsurge in robberies in the country.
Government has announced that combined teams of police and military officers will be deployed with immediate effect to patrol major cities in Ghana as part of efforts to combat the increasing armed robberies.
“Government has also deployed a surgical operation based on intelligence…to flash out criminals and suspected criminals,” Information Minister Mustapha Hamid said at a press briefing Thursday.
Commenting on the development, Agalga told Francis Abban Friday that the opposition NDC preempted the existing security situation following government’s handling of the vigilante menace.
“The reshuffle in the Police service is an admission that we are in some crisis. We predicted that the way and manner we allowed the lawlessness to fester will pose a threat to our security and that is what we see. The number of vigilante attacks under Nana Akufo-Addo have been too many to be counted. The President needs to up his game in the fight against crime in this country,” he said.
He also urged the media to challenge former President Jerry Rawlings provide evidence to back his assertion that the robberies could be politically motivated.
“Former President Rawlings speaks as though he’s privy to some information that has informed the rate of crime we see in this country. If he has some information, he should put it out there. And I think the media should demand that from him”.
