The Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaibu, has accused President John Mahama of bringing Ghana’s democratic credentials into disrepute through a wave of politically motivated arrests.
Speaking on Starr FM’s morning show, Morning Starr, on Thursday, April 23, 2026, Shaibu said the recent arrests of the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe and Bono East Communications Officer of the NPP, Baba Amando can be described as a “regressive” crackdown on free speech aimed at silencing critics.
“What we are saying is that don’t bring our democratic credentials into disrepute,” Shaibu stated.
“Don’t let it be regressive; let it be progressive. Let us all protect our democratic credentials. Let people talk when they have to talk.”
The Weija-Gbawe MP
wondered how many current ministers and government appointees who made far more inflammatory remarks during their time in opposition without are not facing legal consequences.
He specifically referenced past instances where high-ranking officials allegedly insulted then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo or mocked the religious sensitivities of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
“If you juxtapose things that these guys said and what some ministers said when they were in opposition, they were nowhere close,” Shaibu remarked.
“Nowhere close to any of the things that were said by some of the ministers who currently occupy government communications and cabinet positions.”
