An elderly woman was nearly lynched by some angry youth in Sumpini, a community in the West Gonja District of the Savannah region for allegedly being a witch.

The woman, Meiri Ibrahim was attacked in her house at about 10:00 pm Saturday, August 29 by the youth of Sumpini wielding machete and sticks and inflicting deep cutlass wounds on her arm and head.

Narrating her ordeal after she was rescued, Mma Meiri said, the youth accused her of being behind the death of one young man in the community.

According to her, she told the assailants she was innocent and pleaded with them not to harm her but to no avail; they went ahead to attack her.

She said “they have destroyed my room, they said I’m a witch. For the pain they have caused me, gods of the land would judge everyone. I am innocent of the allegation, I don’t know if they have mistaken me for someone, even if I actually kill someone, would you inflict such pain on me? The person is not even sick but they say myself and one Sanatu detained him spiritually and about to kill. When they went to Sanatu’s house they didn’t do anything to her, she run away but for me they didn’t spare me because I have no one save me”.

She however was rushed to the Damongo Government Hospital by some good Samaritans where she is currently receiving treatment.

The matter has since been reported to the Damongo District Police Command and investigations has begun.

Witchcraft accusations in the Savannah region has been in the news for the past one month after the murder of a 90-year-old woman at Kafaba in the East Gonja Municipality.

Last week, the Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister, Cynthia Morrison and the Parliamentary Select Committee on Gender visited some alleged witch camps in the Northern and North East regions.

Their visit was to ascertain the state of the camps and to engage with traditional authorities on how to reintegrate the allege witches in the camps back to communities.
