The Member of Parliament Ningo-Prampram, Sam Nartey George has expressed worry over why the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin and the Business Committee in Parliament are not acting in getting the LGBT bill passed by Parliament.
This follows the call by Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson on Ghana’s Parliament not to criminalize homosexuality and LGBT in the country.
Speaking in an interview on the BBC’s HARDtalk, Cardinal Turkson further stated that the Ghanaian people should be helped to understand the issue better.
“My position has simply been this, that LGBT, gay people may not be criminalised, because they’ve committed no crime, but neither should this position also become something to be imposed on cultures, which are not yet ready to accept stuffs like that,” he added.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Francis Abban on Wednesday, the Ningo-Prampram MP indicated that he cannot fathom why the Business Committee is adamant in bringing the bill to the floor of the House.
“Like I said on the floor of the house, we have the number to pass this bill, I can only urge the Speaker and Business Committee to table this bill. It is also beginning to drag its feet for far too long. I don’t see why the Business Committee is not tabling it, why the Speaker is not requesting for it.
“We need to have this bill taken because I don’t know what is holding it up. We need one day to pass this bill. It been almost three years now and it is dragging for too long,” Mr. Nartey said worriedly.
He continued: “For whatever reason, whoever is holding this bill in Parliament, it should let the bill go. They should bring it before the house and let’s vote on it. It is taking too long.”
