The University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) debate champions, Titus Owusu Darko and Agurobesa Ako Precious, have paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eric Opoku Mensah, ahead of their participation in the 2026 Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) International Debate Competition in Sydney, Australia.

During the meeting on Monday, 20 July 2026, the university’s leadership commended the students for emerging winners of the 2026 Commonwealth Parliamentary Association National Debate Competition and urged them to uphold the image of both UniMAC and Ghana on the global stage.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eric Opoku Mensah, Addressing the UniMAC Debate Champions

Led by the Dean of Students, Dr. Ike Tandoh, the debate champions had the rare opportunity of sitting up close to the Vice-Chancellor to tap into his knowledge and wisdom as a professor in political communications. Expressing hearty sentiments on behalf of the leadership of UniMAC, Professor Eric Opoku Mensah expressed pride in the students’ achievement, describing their qualification for the international competition as a significant milestone for the university. He encouraged them to network, learn from other participants and make the most of the opportunity. “We are very proud of you. Go and come back with flying colours. You are not just representing UniMAC but Ghana as a whole, so conduct yourselves well as worthy ambassadors,” he said.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Winston Kwame Abroampa, urged the students to remain confident and give the competition their all. “I do not believe in luck. I believe this opportunity has been divinely orchestrated. Give it your best shot; you have nothing to lose, so give it your utmost best. I wish you good luck,” he stated.

The Acting Registrar, Dr. Obaapanin Oforiwaa Adu, assured the champions of the university’s full support and encouraged them to be proud representatives of UniMAC, because they are unique. “UniMAC is solidly behind you in all that you do. Go and sell UniMAC. Do your utmost best and fight for the unique UniMAC flag. We wish you all the best. Come back with victory so we can all celebrate,” she said.

Ms. Nana Efua Rockson, the Director of Public Affairs,  also expressed her excitement and encouraged the students to raise high the flag of UniMAC high throughout the competition. She stated that they are presenting the entire UniMAC community – from students to alumni – and that their success reflects on all.

The debate champions, Titus Owusu Darko and Agurobesa Ako Precious expressed gratitude to the university’s management for its support and encouragement. They took the opportunity to confirm to management that they have been invited by Parliament to meet the Speaker of Parliament, Honourable Alban S.K. Bagbin.  And that, this would not have been possible if UniMAC hasn’t given them the communication education to excel at the debate.

They also expressed excitement about the opportunity to represent both UniMAC and Ghana on the international stage and pledged to give their best at the competition.

As the only specialised University in Ghana to train media, art and communication professionals, UniMAC is uniquely positioned to deliver excellence and this is exemplified in the successes and quality of its students and alumni.
