An education-focused NGO Lead for Ghana Fellows has completed and commissioned the first-ever library and Information Technology (IT) center for the Atanve D/A Basic School in the Akatsi North District of the Volta region.
The facility which was commissioned on Friday, March 12 was initiated by the 2018 cohorts of LFG, Ms Hamdia Mahama, and Maame Yaa Afram with funding from World Connect.
The project also had labor support from the chiefs and community folks, while Yo Ghana and other individuals supported with equipment.
The facility named Atanve Literacy and IT center is the first of its kind to be built in the entire Akatsi North district and would serve the purposes of teaching and learning ICT to schools within the catchment area.
The facility has been furnished with computers, books, and science laboratory equipment for basic schools.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony on Friday, the Headteacher of the school Mr. Okine Boniface, said the facility would not only support the teaching and learning but would also bring to the pupils a significant transformation.
Mr. Okine, while expressing appreciation to LFG for the initiative, called on stakeholders to support the school and the pupils to justify the intervention they have received by excelling in their final examinations.
Speaking on behalf of the community, Torgbui Hodzi Dunyo IV, chief of Atanve lauded the initiative noting that, “It has taken us ages to know what a computer is and to have such a facility here, I believe it will form the foundation of these young ones.”
Torgbui Dunyo IV also called on the District Assembly to help build a modern kindergarten for the community.
He said the kindergarten would help keep the younger ones in school and offer them the opportunity to start class lessons as their counterparts across the country.
Sharing her experience, having served in the community for the past two years, Ms Hamdiya Mahama said, “I was posted here in the year 2018 and I worked here for two years and it has been amazing and I have the opportunity to impact lives with Lead for Ghana’s vision of ensuring that all children acquire excellent education, I believe we have also contributed our quota to ensure that that vision materialized.”
The Agotime-Ziope and the Akatsi South Districts are also expected to benefit from these initiatives from cohorts posted to schools in the two districts.
