A legal practitioner, Lawyer Twum Barimah, has described Ghana’s current government as “complex and complicated” following the recent tensions between the Speaker of Parliament and the Chief Justice.
Speaking to Kasapa News, Lawyer Twum Barimah shared his views on the ongoing issues between the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, and the Chief Justice. He expressed that NPP government has become “complex and complicated,” particularly due to the current disagreements surrounding the Speaker’s decision of declaring the seat of four members of parliament vacant.
He said, “The government is complex and complicated because the Speaker is only using the law to work, so I see nothing wrong with it.” Barimah emphasized that the Speaker’s actions are grounded in legal principles and questioned why there is public outcry now.”
He continued, “The same law was used to judge the case of both Adwoa Safo and Kennedy Agyapong, and nobody spoke about it. So, if this issue has popped up and he’s using the same law to solve this one too, why are they finding problems with that?”.
Barimah stated that in his view, Speaker Bagbin is acting within the law, fully supported by the constitution. “The Speaker is only working with the constitution and law,” he concluded. He believes this is why the current situation feels so “complex and complicated,” especially given the differing interpretations of the law.
